When the milk turns sour or the freezer starts dripping, you want a fridge repair near me that turns up, finds the real fault and fixes it at a fair price. Most fridge breakdowns come down to a handful of parts: a fan, a thermostat, a start relay, a defrost heater or a door seal. A good technician tests before replacing anything and tells you the cost first. Describe your fridge and the fault once, and independent fridge repair technicians near you quote you directly. Sending a request is free and you are under no obligation to accept.

The faults technicians see most

Fridge repair services spend most of their time on a short list of faults. Knowing them helps you describe the problem clearly:

  • Dirty condenser coils at the back or underneath, so the fridge runs hot and never switches off.
  • A failed fan, either the one inside the freezer that pushes cold air down, or the one beside the compressor.
  • A blocked defrost drain that leaves water under the salad drawers or ice on the back wall.
  • A failed defrost heater, timer or sensor on frost-free models, which slowly chokes the airflow with ice.
  • A faulty thermostat or start relay, often heard as clicking with no hum.
  • A worn door seal, a leak in the gas circuit, or a compressor that has given up.

If the fridge is on but simply warm, our page on a fridge not cooling goes through the causes in order.

Five minutes of checks before you call

Check that the plug point works by plugging in a kettle. Look at the thermostat dial, since children and cleaners knock it. Close the door on a sheet of paper: if it slides out easily, the seal is not gripping. Make sure there is a hand's width of space behind the fridge for air. Finally, look at the coils at the back. A thick coat of dust and kitchen grease makes the compressor work much harder, and vacuuming it off sometimes solves the problem.

What a fridge repair costs

Cost guides put a call-out at about R450 to R850 and typical repairs at about R750 to R2,900, depending on the part. Seals, relays, thermostats and fans sit at the lower end. Defrost faults on frost-free models and inverter boards cost more because the part must match the model. A compressor replacement with a regas is the big one, often about R2,500 to R5,000 fitted, and on an old small fridge it may make more sense to replace the whole unit.

Comparing fridge repair technicians

Ask whether the call-out fee is taken off the repair if you go ahead. Ask for the diagnosis and the price in writing before work starts, and what guarantee is given on parts and labour, in writing. If gas work is needed, ask for proof of their refrigerant handling qualification. For a regular check-up rather than a breakdown, see fridge service.

What to include in your request

  • Model number from the sticker inside the door
  • What the fridge is doing and since when
  • Age of the fridge, roughly
  • Your suburb and when someone can be home
  • Whether the freezer section still works

Fridge Repair for different clients

  • Households: a family fridge that has started leaking or running warm in the middle of summer
  • Landlords, guest houses and B&Bs: landlords fixing a tenant's fridge quickly so food is not lost and complaints stop
  • Shops, cafes and supermarkets: a small shop's back-room fridge for staff lunches and stock that has stopped cooling
  • Restaurants, butcheries and caterers: a takeaway's upright kitchen fridge that ices up on the back wall every week
  • Farms, packhouses and dairies: a farmhouse fridge far from town that needs a technician willing to travel
  • Factories and cold stores: staff canteen fridges in a factory or depot that run hard all day
  • Schools, clinics and public buildings: a school staffroom or clinic tearoom fridge that needs a new thermostat
  • Technicians and repairers: technicians comparing notes on common faults and the parts they carry

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth repairing an old fridge?
Often, yes, if the fault is a seal, thermostat, relay, fan or defrost part. Those repairs usually cost far less than a new fridge. It gets harder to justify when the compressor has failed on an older, smaller fridge, because the compressor and regas together can approach the price of a new one. Ask the technician for both figures before deciding.
Can a fridge be repaired at home, or must it go to a workshop?
Most fridge repairs are done in your kitchen. Technicians carry common parts such as relays, thermostats and fan motors, and can regas on site. A fridge usually only goes to a workshop for major sealed system work, or when a part has to be ordered and the technician prefers to test the fridge for a few days afterwards.
Does FridgeRepair.co.za send the technician?
No. We are a free quote request service, not a repair company. Your request goes to independent fridge repair technicians in your area, and they contact you with their own quotes. You agree the price, the time and the guarantee directly with the technician you choose. We do not fix fridges and we do not charge you anything.
What details should I give a fridge repair technician?
Give the model number from the sticker inside the door or on the back, the age of the fridge, and exactly what it is doing: warm in the fridge but cold in the freezer, clicking, buzzing, leaking water or ice on the back wall. A photo of the sticker helps the technician bring the right part on the first visit.
