Upington: heat, power and cold chains
Upington lies on the Orange River at the edge of the Kalahari, and it is one of the hottest towns in the country, with summer days that can top 40 °C. A green ribbon of irrigated farms along the river grows table grapes for export and grapes for raisins and sultanas, and packhouses and cold stores near Kakamas, Keimoes and Kanoneiland run hard from late spring. Wine cellars cool their tanks in the same heat. In town and in Paballelo, fridges in hot kitchens and outside rooms run nonstop and fail early. Dust storms clog coils. Packhouses, farmers, households, butcheries and guest houses for Kalahari travellers ask most.
The requests we see from Upington usually come from:
- Farms, packhouses and dairies: a compressor for the farm chest freezer after a lightning surge
- Households: a new compressor fitted and regassed in a large family fridge that went warm
- Factories and cold stores: compressors held as spares for canteen and staff room fridges
