Appliance spares counters in Stellenbosch and Technopark stock door seals, thermostats and fans for common fridges, and bigger items like compressors, refrigerant cylinders and condensing units often come from wholesalers in Somerset West or the northern suburbs. Bar fridges and small chest freezers sell well each January when students move in. Estates replacing old cellar units should ask whether the new condensing unit uses a refrigerant that is easy to get.
Fridges and refrigeration in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch combines a university town with a wine valley, and its fridges reflect both. Thousands of students in digs, res rooms and shared houses run bar fridges and small two-door fridges that change hands every year, and landlords call technicians between tenants. Wine estates in Jonkershoek, Devon Valley and along the Helshoogte road cool tanks and barrel cellars, and their restaurants and tasting rooms keep walk-ins and wine fridges full for tourists. Kayamandi and Cloetesville have spaza shops and taverns with bottle coolers working long hours. Valley summers are hot and winters wet. Landlords, wine estates, restaurants, spaza owners and parents of students ask for quotes most.
Typical fridge compressors requests in the area come from:
- Landlords, guest houses and B&Bs: a compressor swap in a landlord's fridge instead of buying a new one
- Restaurants, butcheries and caterers: a compressor for an under-counter fridge or prep freezer in a busy kitchen
- Farms, packhouses and dairies: a compressor for the farm chest freezer after a lightning surge
